The watt is a measure of the rate of energy transfer over a unit of time, with one watt equal to one joule (J) per second: W = J/s.

So that 1MWH = 1,000,000 *3,600 joules.

Next, you need to worry about the efficiency with which the gas is used. If you are using gas to produce energy then the two most common methods are heating water to produce steam (thermal power station) and a gas turbine (think an aircraft jet engine burning gas rather than a liquid fuel).

Both have efficiencies in the low 30's. (per cent)

A more efficient method is to burn the gas in a gas turbine and then use the hot gas from the turbine to run a thermal power station (combined cycle). A combined cycle power station can have efficiencies in the low 60's

I googled it myself as I was interested to see if we had sufficient gas reserves to power a 440 megawatt power station. It’s currently running on coal but I think it could be converted to run on gas with minimal capital.
