For anyone interested in energy, ECT has been an alluring stock for many years.
The fact that the Latrobe Valley lignite resource contains more accessible energy than any other resource in Australasia has enhanced this allure.
The Latrobe Valley resource has been used almost exclusively for electricity generation where around 50 million tonnes a year was burned at the three major brown coal power station complexes: namely Loy Yang (A&B), Yallourn and Hazelwood.
The oldest of the power stations, Hazelwood, was closed in 2017 and it was announced recently that Yallourn would close in 2028. Yallourn was licenced until 2037. Loy Yang A is licenced until 2050 but given the earlier than expected closures of Hazelwood and Yallourn, it is very likely that Loy Yang A (and Loy Yang B) will also close prematurely.
Yallourn’s premature closure was largely due to the 3 to 4 gigawatts per annum of renewable power being brought into the national grid during 2019 and 2020. 4 gigawatts is around double the largest Victorian power station, Loy Yang A.
The generation costs of renewable energy (solar and wind) have reduced substantially over the last few years and is now cost competitive with brown coal. Whilst renewables cannot currently provide reliable base load power, developing battery and other storage technologies will provide a base load solution in time.
Yallourn power station is the major user of the lignite mined at Yallourn. The closure of the power station in 2028 will lead to the closure of the mine unless another major user (mining rate currently around 15 mtpa) commits to major offtake (5 mtpa minimum I would think).
Whilst hydrogen production from Victorian lignite is an opportunity to utilise the resource, the technology being utilised by the Japanese relies on being able to capture and store the CO2 generated by the production process (gasification) in deep wells in the Otway Ranges. The technology is not yet proven and, in any event, do we want potentially massive amounts of CO2 stored underground in Victoria?
The Japanese invested $1B in the late 1980’s in an attempt to commercialise a technology to process Victorian lignite into oil. They succeeded in producing oil but at a cost that far exceeded the then current cost of crude.
The only recent examples of companies commercialising technologies using this resource are fertiliser and char producers on a very small scale (i.e. consuming <200,000 tpa of resource).
If the SE Australian market for char continues to grow there is an opportunity for ECT but I cannot realistically see a sizeable market for dried lignite either as an industrial fuel or as a gateway product.
The only future hope for significant utilisation of Victoria’s lignite resource is the Japanese attempt to commercialise hydrogen gas production. It will not be electricity generation or steel making that consumes the resource in the future.
The ECT board continues to promote investment in the company despite the reality that has been playing out over the last 5 years.
ECT’s opportunity to become a significant “player” in the Latrobe Valley has passed.

ECT just needs to build the plant to show Coldry can be produced at a steady rate.
ECT will open the gate for the future of the Valley IMO
I'm looking fwd to cooking a feast in the Webber once the plant starts pumping out product.
