China – Hydropower shortage continues to disrupt post-lockdown recovery in China
Sichuan province: >1mt pa aluminium smelting capacity idled due to collapse of hydropower production in drought conditions
- Q2 growth contracted by 13.7% in Shanghai on Covid lockdowns, Shanghai GDP was US$583bn in 2021 (SCMP)
- Seven days of >40C heat also slowed growth as high temperatures and drought conditions hit hydropower supply.
- The city cut lighting and other services to conserve power for industry and for household use (airconditioning).
- Shanghai is home to around 25m people and 2.67m businesses.
- The city has also ordered a halt to outdoor work between 11am-3pm on days where temperatures are >35C.
- Further blackouts in Shanghai are seen as potentially devastating for the automotive and semiconductor sectors.
- Sichuan province generated some 82% of its electrical power from hydro dams
