Daniel Yergin, is the guy often noted to know the most about oil. Not least because his book on it won a Pulitzer prize and he was the President of the oil Council for years.
His book on oil makes good reading it lists all the dirty (geostrategic) tricks mail by the Us oil companies played although the Russians & Others had their fair share.
