I was worried about the real vs fake diamonds thing until Bitcoin came along. Seems to prove to me that literally anything can be considered to have inherent value if people believe it does.
Real diamonds still have the same appeal that they still had, they are beautiful objects which are coveted due to their improbable creation and transferral from hundreds of kilometers underground. Fake diamonds are just fancier cubic zirconia.
