I would say the circumstances have significantly changed since the "flog it off once MB is proven" strategy was developed.

Back then the company was looking at a single, but niche application - Storage Class Memory

Now the company looks like it has potentially 3 applications (possibly more if anyone with knowledge can, uh, CHIP in):

1. Storage Class Memory
2. a potential DRAM replacement in datacentre and if 20 nm is proven, in mobile devices
3. An analogue memory device for use in AI

With tuning, you could fab something that does the work of FLASH too but that is probably a mature phase (ie. out of patent) employment of the tech, although being able to fab all memory needs on one chip sounds pretty compelling too.

Nothing to stop the company selling the rights to use the tech exclusively (with an ongoing royalty) for specific applications (say SCM and DRAM replacement) whilst working up an IP portfolio for the analogue memory application. Keeps 4DS as an R&D company, underpinned by commercial revenue.
