I think a licensing deal is most likely for number 2 at this stage, but if 4DS is a DRAM killer then you would think an opportunistic bid is the only chance of ownership for WD.

The offer would have to be large enough to satisfy shareholders it is the best deal we'll get. But without an auction, we'll never know. So I really can't see WD being able to make an offer without the board testing the waters prior to accepting same. And as we all know, there a far deeper pockets out there.
