Stanford is one the leading technical universities in the world. Huge in computing and information technology. Nothing "Aldi" about this facility. Would you say that researching solar cells at UNSW (where pretty much every solar panel's tech comes from) was the "Aldi" option?
They won't be fabbing whole chips here. Just refining the etching process that will prep the top surface of the megabit array for bonding with the platform transistors. If it can contribute to a PhD's research thesis, all the better.
