It's been said before that the spelling of metre in US English is meter. There are many other differences and that is put down to US breaking away from mother in the 1770s. Much later there was an influx of French influence into English English - gramme for gram - programme for program etc - but US did not adopt those changes.

So which is really the correct English spelling ?? Who cares anyway, they are both correct, IMO.

While on the subject of English - do you know the story about Wycliffe ? Below is a snip from Wikipedia.

More than two centuries before the King James Version came into existence, Oxford professor and theologian John Wycliffe undertook the first-ever English translation of Scripture. The hand-printed "Early Version" of the Wycliffe Bible, which first appeared in 1382, offered a literal translation of the Latin Vulgate.

The Church responded of course, and when he died, he was buried in unconsecrated ground implying that his soul would not go to heaven. Even later he was dug up, burned to ashes which were thrown into a stream which flowed to the Avon. This inspired a rhyme in Old English,

The Avon to the Severn runs
The Severn to the sea,
And Wycliffe's dust will be spread abroad.
As far as the waters be.

It is said that so too was his bible 'spread abroad' and the English language too.
So is that the reason that English, (a relatively insignificant language even in England at the time, compared to French, in the Norman classes, and Norse in the North) became an international language ?
