Pilbara gold find WA’s biggest since Gruyere and Tropicana
The central cluster of deposits at De Grey Mining’s gold project in Western Australia’s iron-rich Pilbara has been estimated as a 6.8 million-ounce resource, making it one of the most sizeable discoveries in the state in the past decade.
De Grey’s Mallina Gold Project, 80 kilometres south of Port Hedland, now claims a total mineral resource of 9 million ounces – exceeding the expectations of analysts and the company itself – with the maiden estimate of its Hemi deposits released on Wednesday.
The largest gold discoveries in the past two decades in WA were the Goldfields projects Gruyere in 2013 and Tropicana in 2005.
The Pilbara explorer’s total Mallina estimate is based on a rate of 230 million tonnes at 1.2 grams of gold per tonne.
De Grey is hoping its large resource base would provide a platform for the development of an open pit mine with processing facilities centralised around Hemi ...
