Sounds right from what I have read. XRF can detect purity of gold bars, and relatively high ppm in quartz veins, but in drill cores there can be false positives due to other minerals very close in the spectrum - it detects gold but it can't separate it - so they look for combinations of indicators which, apparently, don't apply in the case of NN. So I was wrong to think they could be able to know the ppm of gold, only the mineralised intercepts and visible gold ... both of which they do report from time to time.
