If they did a JV with Sandfire, they would not have a controlling influence in what happens with the JV. With CLY they do. That appears to be the main reason for the choice.
Also while it definitely is IMO a potential company maker for CLY, that is only because it was a microcap company with nothing else driving the sp (or market cap) higher ATM. ABU already has a mc of around $85mill so it is not a company maker for ABU simply because ABU already is a company with a decent market cap.
