”Marcela Hernando, current deputy of the Radical Party, was appointed by **riel Boric to assume the head of the Ministry of Mining. The future Secretary of State will take charge of the portfolio at critical times for the sector, when many voices demand the nationalization of both copper and lithium.

In fact, in the Constitutional Convention a norm was already presented that proposes the nationalization of these resources, one of them was already approved by the Environment Commission, now it must be voted by the Plenary where it needs at least 2/3 so that be visaed.

In an interview with Emol, the future Mining Minister was not surprised by initiatives of this type, also taking into account that the history of Chile already has an episode of copper nationalization. In any case, she recognized that approving something like this is difficult and, therefore, she called for dialogue.

“It is not a strange thing. In Chile it already happened with the nationalization in the 70s. That was supported transversally, here there would have to be a transversal agreement. You have to reach agreements that are tremendously demanding in terms of the quorum, therefore, you have to talk, talk and talk”.

“If the nationalization of a company were to be approved, it would be fair to pay whatever investment that company has and what is more complicated, I would say, is how you value what you would have to pay. Also evaluate if the country is in conditions for that”.

“There is still a lot of water to run under the bridge, we still have a lot to talk about,” he added.”
