For me, and I imagine most of the residential smart bulb owners, it’s not about cost savings. I have about a dozen Hue lights and I love them (but not the app). Its one of those things that once you have it, you could never go back to “normal” bulbs. For starters I rarely touch a light switch, they just just turn on/off based on the location of my phone. Creating the color schemes is addictivly fun too. I have a sunset style theme most of the time, as well as a dim blue for watching movies. It’s really cool. Kinda hard to describe the benefit until you try it for yourself. And oh my god the light strips are so much fun. I’ve got one under the couch, one behind the TV, and one under the kitchen cabinets. They look really cool.
So, residential isn’t really about saving money. But bulbs sold to commercial locations might be different. You can get the simple white lights a lot cheaper, and that might be a more realistic cost savings solution.
