Kenya Expects Crude Exports in Mid-2017
Tuesday, August 30, 2016
Kenya estimates that it will begin commercial crude exports by June of next year, as the country’s president, Uhuru Kenyatta called on Tullow Oil and Africa Oil Corp. to expedite oil production.
Earlier this month it was announced that a pilot scheme to produce between 2,000 and 4,000 bpd of crude was approved by the Kenyan government. The pilot production scheme will enable Kenya to reap early benefits from the resources discovered by the two firms.
According to a statement from the communication office of Kenyan president Uhuru Kenyatta, the country’s infrastructure will be upgraded to allow the crude to travel to the port of Mombasa via trucks. The oil will be transported by road from Turkana to Eldoret for onward delivery by train to the port of Mombasa, about 1,089 km.
While the crude in the pilot production scheme will be shipped to the coast via trucks and then train, the development plan for the resources discovered by Tullow and Africa Oil calls for the construction of a crude pipeline from Lokichar to the Lamu Port.
According to Energy Cabinet Secretary Charles Keter, the construction of the pipeline is still on course. Keter said the government and its upstream partners, Tullow, Africa Oil, and Maersk who recently joined the pair in Kenya, concluded a Joint Development Agreement (JDA) for the development of the pipeline.
President Kenyatta emphasized the need to move with speed in the implementation of the pipeline project. “We have started and we are not moving back. We want to be at the top of the pile. So, we have set a path and by 2019, Kenya is going to be a major oil producer and exporter,” President Kenyatta said.
