You do realise that every short sold stock is eventually bought back?
If there is a massive build up of shorts and AGI performs well, eventually there will be a massive short squeeze - I wonder in that situation if the same calls of short term price distortion will be equally as worrying?
I never understand people that do not view other forms of trading as beneficial to the market. All forms of trading that are different to the approach you take should help your investment performance.
For instance, a bunch of shorters drive AGI lower. If you think they are doing this because they are evil and there is no fundamental reason for them to do so - then you should be super excited! Your favourite investment just got cheaper! You can now buy the present value of the future cash flows of this business for less money. Good times.
The next argument I have heard previously is that the investor is not planning to hold long term and as such this downturn in price is very damaging. My reply is that, I am sorry for your loss - but if you are not prepared to hold your "investment" through a period of *misquoting* then you don't really have enough conviction to call it an investment and are likely just trading. So I then say to such people, if you want to play the trading game - be prepared to play by the market rules. Shorting is a completely legal and rational part of a functional market.
A favourite quote of mine sums it up nicely
“Winners don’t make excuses when the other side plays the game."
