The mines in Queenstown Tasmania used to use a sulphide ore as fuel for smelting. The reaction with air is quite exothermic, often the ore would be burning as it was coming out the mine. They didn't recover the sulphur and the pollution was spectacular . You can still see the bare hillsides on Google Earth. I am sure you would need to recover sulphur if you burned sulphides today.
