I think you need to look at it from his options' perspective. He has more options in the company that rest of Top 20 put together bar Mercer and SIO. His options package would entitle him to 6% of the company. An ambitious man like WP who is completely used to big salary and big packages from big pharma would hardly think that his current remuneration is that excessive.
He is waiting for his big pay day when the company is valued in the billions. He has created a significant portfolio of IP almost single handedly, via his incredible team of medical advisors, which is definitely worth billions. In his mid why should he be obligated to buy just to please some retail holders?
