The 1.8% was a month-on-month figure for Department Stores (which was amongst the highest), whereas the 3% was an annual figure for all retail. The Australian article didn't make that particularly clear.
Whether or not that high Department Store number was because people are bringing forward their Christmas shopping to November to match the sales or not will be in interesting on the December figures.
All else being equal the cash-flows for Myer this year should be looking pretty good, so I am looking forward to the divvy.
