surgeons in the main don't place these devices, they are placed by cardiologists.
the benefit and point being you don't need theatre, opening the chest, or GA . they were pioneered for elderly patients with aortic valve disease who were deemed high risk for valve replacement- in Australia and NZ they are referred to as TAVI procedures- transcatheter aortic valve implantation- and they are done in the cath suite.
