Entering the Xiaogan Service Area in the Hubei section of the Beijing-Hong Kong-Macau Expressway, a row of “container” and red walnut-colored cabins behind the newly-renovated star-rated toilets attracted the attention of many passengers.
“This is a newly installed international advanced sewage treatment system. The sewage goes in and the water comes out. This new equipment has successfully solved our sewage disposal problem.” The service area manager said that the equipment is called decentralized. The intelligent sewage treatment system was first put into use in the Xiaogan service area in September last year. After more than 10 months of monitoring, most of the sewage discharge targets reached the four types of surface water quality requirements, and the ammonia nitrogen content was reduced from 15 mg per liter to 5 mg. The chemical oxygen demand has been reduced from 100 mg per liter to 30 mg, and wastewater recycling has been achieved, reducing operating costs by 30%.
Due to the distance from the urban sewage discharge system, sewage treatment in the service area has always been a big problem. According to statistics, only the Xiaogan service area needs to discharge about 200 tons of sewage every day. In the past, most of the highway service areas in Hubei Province used “buried integrated equipment”, but with the rapid growth of traffic, old equipment could not meet the increasing demand for sewage discharge. To this end, Hubei Xiecheng Transportation Environmental Protection Co., Ltd. introduced membrane aeration bioreactor technology for urban sewage treatment and seawater desalination for sewage treatment in service areas, and jointly developed a decentralized intelligent sewage treatment system with Israeli companies.
The system can realize intelligent and remote control and has a service life of up to 15 years. The treated sewage can be used to flush toilets, green watering and landscape water to realize the recycling of water resources.
At present, the system has been put into use in 40 toll stations, 19 pairs of service areas in Shaanxi Province and Hubei Province.
