Its not just about EVs, I am starting to man up for the BATU HIJAU expansion project of the copper mine on Sumbawa Island Indonesia. I am onsite now and when totally up to speed will have about 400 or 500 Electrical Trades and Instrumentation Trades for the expansion. All hand tools from cable cutters , crimpers, drills and grinders will be battery operated. Where 10 years ago they were plug in style.
Its quicker and easier to supply the tools battery operated. I don't need to arrange near as much temporary site power for those tools. The men are safer they pose no electric shock hazard so thats a plus safety wise.
Hundreds of tools will be purchased all Li battery. So whilst you worry about EVs they are a tip of the iceberg really. But anyway Australia being what it is you are correct the distances are great so battery capacity is a question but then again the greater population don't do the kilometres daily that you worry about. at present a Tesla 3 with LFP batteries can still get 400 + kilometres out of a charge so that is a lot for most people being the greater city population. So country folk and piston heads will not come over easy but eventually they like piston engines will die off.
Lithium is not flavour of the month its power pack of the future and here to stay for a generation or two.
The technology & tooling that has gone into NCM or LFP has cost a lot so companies will want a return on that knowledge for years to come.
