The refineries in the Southern US that take mostly heavy crudes were owned by Venezuela to process their own crudes they export to the US. With the resources nationalism came the sanctions and the breaking of these trade relations. The US would have shifted to heavy Arabian crudes to displace the sanctioned Venezuelan crude.
