China never sought conflict with the US. It is the US which doesn't want anyone to challenge its global domination. The Sinophobic rhetoric from the US had been simmering for a long time but Trump, being the Kramer (Seinfeld) of politics, spoke out loudly what others had been muttering all along. From that point on, no US administration can back down on the anti-China rhetoric or they will be seen as weak appeasers by both sides of domestic politics.

The Ukraine conflict has fast-tracked the parallel financial system that China and Russia want as a hedge against US blackmail. Russia shrugged off the Visa/Mastercard ban by switching to the Chinese UnionPay. Similar alternatives exist for SWIFT and other Western financial institutions.

It will be interesting to see what it means for the Western financial giants' bottom line if Chinese alternatives gain wider global acceptance. Financial instruments are far easier to compete with than hardware, where the West still enjoys superior manufacturing standards. Nothing can compete with German engineering!
