Silicon anodes will intensify anode material competition
While there is little doubt that electric vehicles are becoming more widespread globally, consumers still have doubts over range
and charging speeds. One technology that claims to solve both these problems is silicon. The use of silicon powders has
previously been restricted by its tendency to swell and degrade the anode, but recent technological improvements are paving
the way for higher levels of adoption.
China is currently installing significant capacity for silicon-carbon composites; the low technical barriers to entry have
encouraged a number of new entrants. Major producers Putailai, Shanshan and BTR are now moving towards mass
commercialisation, with customers BYD and CATL patenting methods for integrating the material into full cells. However, the
problem of considerable swelling during charge has not been completely solved and continues to impact the safety and cycle life
of the battery using silicon-carbon composites.
