I agree with what you are saying. I have chosen to take the money and go elsewhere, but you are probably right that a higher offer may come to close this out. I am surprised they didnt do this a decade ago.
AWC just collects the cheques they get from their operations that they are a percentage of, so I have always thought it a strange structure. Like a royalty company, but not quite.
