Finally got hold of The Australian's article from Thursday titled "Vocus still ripe for picking despite EQT's withdrawal" (p. 18) which mentions AYS only very briefly as a "prospective takeover target" without providing any further background than this:

    "[...]
EQT's withdrawal does open the door to AGL Energy to have another tilt at Vocus, especially if the power retailer's boss Brett Redman is serious about diversifying its offers to the market. In an environment where the logic of owning the customer through bundled offers (power, internet and media) is gaining primacy, industry sources told DataRoom that AGL may look to put its hefty balance sheet to good use and have another go at stepping out of its comfort zone.
The telecom-energy retail convergence is not without example in the local market, with amaysim (another prospective takeover target) proving that the model can work.
    [...]"

Could AGL perhaps buy both, Vocus and AYS? As I explained in this thread there have been repeated considerations of merging Vocus and Amaysim since at least 2016 which could bring immediate synergies given that Vocus - just like AYS - is an MVNO on the Optus network with 155k mobile subscribers and also 140k energy subscribers.
