There is an end to an ERA the underground at Mt Isa, sitting in the Barkly Hotel on night shift change feeling the blasting rattle the walls of the pub during shift change. I spent years of my youth as a Construction Supervisor Electrical in the Isa during the upgrade for the Phosphate Hill job 2000ish comes to mind when they laid the chimney flat and harnessed the waste Sulphur to add to the rock of Phosphate hill and produce fertilizer.
The waste heat from the copper smelting process chimney was harnessed and sent to a boiler and a 10 Megawatt steam Alternator generated 11kV which was attached to the 11kV bus in the smelting switch room.
Also spent years before on the original Mt Isa Copper Smelter Construction project with a company called Simon Carves Electrical.
They are only closing the underground due mined out, but all the other mines locally still feed the crushing circuit with ore. Its copper heaven or hell depending your likes or dislike for the Isa.
Many say the best feeling in the Isa is when the jet takes off when leaving many will never leave the Isa due its a great location for Gulf fishing and great outdoors just no waves close by so no skeg heads allowed.
