"Abstract:
Boeing has invested in the development of structural health monitoring (SHM) sensors over the years and is currently working multiple projects to implement such technology as viable inspection methods.
In 2018, Boeing partnered with Structural Monitoring Systems (SMS) and Delta TechOps to pursue using Comparative Vacuum Monitoring (CVM) sensors on the 737NG Aft Pressure Bulkhead which has inspections mandated by an airworthiness directive (AD).
This paper will cover what is structural health monitoring and the advantages that it provides. It will also cover the selection process that Boeing used for the choice of the sensor technology and the application on the 737NG aft pressure bulkhead as an alternate inspection method to low frequency eddy current (LFEC).
Boeing will share the timeline of the sensor technology development along with milestone of the certification process."
