Here are the performance of the Fund Management businesses side by side:
Platinum
Magellan
Magellan has missed its benchmarks by over 10% and only have a few strategies. Airlie is about $8B, while performed well doesn’t make much of an overall dent.
Platinum performance was far superior and are growing strategies like Health (tech fund on par with MFG performance).
Understand your position, but it is hard to argue against PTM’s superior investment performance with the above tables from the companies. I like a fund management business to focus on its core business, less risk of huge write-offs.
The rear window article in the AFR on the 22nd of August gives similar opinion on MFG to your opinion on PTM. Both do have good infrastructure with Financial Adviser networks, but this is increasingly changing with technology.
