Think about it psychologically - you are down on your luck, mortgage isnt doing too hot, living mostly paycheck to paycheck. You're stressed out, what do people do when they are stressed? Try to have fun.
When you are under pressure you lean on your vices more to cope. Thinks like drinking, smoking, drugs, unhealthy food, gambling will all increase in a downturn. It's incredibly unfortunate but it's reality.
