Off market buy backs (the type relevant to budget announcement) advantage SMSFs. This is because they can tender their shares at lower than market value and be better off than selling on market because the off market buyback has franking credits at the 30% company tax rate attached which are refundable to the SMSF (with a tax rate of between 15% and 0%.
On market buybacks are different. There is no tender process, the company appoints a broker and simply buys its own shares in the market just like and other buyer.
