FeibusTech believes that hearables have much greater potential than wrist-worn wearables, and forecasts the former will overtake the latter by 2020. FeibusTech projects hearables will mushroom to 92.5 million units shipped in 2020, versus 89.2 million smartwatches and fitness trackers. The greater upside is for several reasons:
- Hearables are tapping into a much larger market – audio headsets – than wrist-worn wearables do.
- They are taking advantage of the latest innovations in Bluetooth technology, which has attained a level of audio fidelity that is appealing to a wide swath of consumers.
- The ear is a much better spot than the wrist to collect biometric data, which yields more accurate results.
- They springboard off a surge in voice-centric user interface technology, which is blossoming in successful products like the Amazon Echo.
