I didn't want to get into who was deserving and not deserving.
I'm just pointing out that in a board of say 12 people, the chance of having 6 men and 6 women is 22.5% (all else equal).
Meaning there's a 77.5% chance that a man was picked over a deserving woman, or a woman was picked over a deserving man. Or unnecessary positions were created to get to 50/50.
I have since learned there are some interesting studies on the diversity of boards though and their performance.
And given we will likely need government funding at some stage, it might be a smart move, even if I hate the ethics of it.
