I don't know why these guys keep talking up selling potato and gravy in Woolworths. No one has ever heard of Daly Potato Co and they're certainly not associating "premium" with the tub of potato and gravy next to the supermarket hot chickens. More generally, getting people to pay a premium for potatoes seems like somewhat of an uphill battle in a supermarket setting.
Why don't they just stick to potato farming? They don't have the volume or cost base to compete on pate or smoked salmon (sorry, but no one is fooled when you put a fancy label on farmed Tassie salmon) direct into store. You need big volume to justify the marketing spend – this is a $10m/year company with 7 retail brands!!! Someone like MBH gets away with a broad product range because they have a single recognised brand name in Maggie Beer.
