Another sign of these international carriers benefiting AIZ domestically:

New passenger fees for Tauranga's booming airport

"....The levy coincides with a growth boom at the airport that will see Air New Zealand flights boosted to 94 a week from November 1 - a jump of 21 flights a week....."

The thing that seems to escape some is that these international competitors are themselves advertising for New Zealand tourism and they fly into New Zealand but not internally where there is basically Air New Zealand & Jetstar.. Air New Zealand is a member of the star alliance which has Singapore Airlines & Air China - it has agreements with Cathay Pacific & Virgin Australia and also code shares with Etihad Airways & Virgin Atlantic.

The other thing is jetstar is a budget carrier:

Jetstar flight cancellations disrupt hundreds as school holidays end

    October 9 2016

"....Jetstar airlines grounded flights out of Wellington on the last day of the school holidays affecting passengers returning to Auckland after WOW and children flying home.

The cancellation of two Jetstar flights from Wellington to Auckland on Sunday has angered hundreds of passengers - leaving them out of pocket, facing lengthy waits and longer routes, and some likely to be late for work or school on Monday.
Jetstar said the cancellations - of the 3.10pm and 6.20pm flights from Wellington, and return flights from Auckland - were due to crew being ill. Passengers had been offered refunds, offered flights on Monday or re-routed via Christchurch.
The airline said it had no choice but to cancel the flights and had notified passengers by text and email on Saturday night.

A Jetstar spokesman said about 700 travellers were affected - split evenly between Wellington and Auckland - after the airline had exhausted its staffing pool..."

In a social media post Jeni Heath vowed she would never travel with the airline again.
"Next time you guys cancel my flight and send me to Christchurch for 8 hours I'll record the whole thing for you and tag you. Maybe your staff might be a bit friendlier too if they're on camera! Definitely my last ever Jetstar journey anyway."

They had all received a text message saying the flight had been cancelled due to crew requirements. They were directed to a website that they could not access on a mobile, so had to ring the call centre.
Ward said she was on the phone for 30 minutes with "every flight disappearing in front of  my eyes, likewise with Air New Zealand."
She ended up booking a $350 flight with Air New Zealand that leaves at 6.40pm tonight, as the only Jetstar flight she could get would leave after 6pm on Monday...."

I'm sure those 700 passengers will be sure to let others know of their experiences for not flying Air New Zealand...
