In 1951 encouraged by a discovery bonus and a generous fixed Uranium price an Uranium mining boom occurred. This triggered a period of speculation in the penny stock market. For a short glorious period Moah had more paper millionaires per thousand than the US. Unfortunately, their fortunes disappeared with the eventual bust.
Today, Moah is surrounded by 100’s of closed mines and it has about 5000 residents with an economy based in a massive base (+1million) of seasonal visitors.Thus, traditional mining is perceived as a threat by some. Also, any potential threat to property values is opposed by NIMBY’s (not in my back yard) outsiders who are well organized and vote en-mass. Net net, I do not foresee new Uranium mines although low impact mining projects such as ASN should be locally supported due to good year around paying paying jobs.
