Philips and TU/e take the lead in digital innovation for healthcare, lighting and data science

    • 03 June 2014
Multi-year partnership allows TU/e to offer over 70 additional PhD positions

Philips and TU/e have announced a strategic cooperation aimed at accelerating the exploration and development of digital innovations in healthcare, lighting and data science. The two organizations are to set up a digital innovation program, under which researchers will work together to develop new digital technology in real life settings. The innovations will be focused on bringing solutions to grand societal challenges. Such challenges include affordable access to high-quality healthcare, energy-efficient lighting solutions for densely populated cities, the prevention of cardiovascular diseases and the treatment of various forms of cancer. The joint Digital Innovation Program will include state-of-the-art test beds where researchers will be able to test and validate their digital technologies and accelerate the adoption of new integrated health, big data and lighting solutions. This partnership will allow the TU/e to provide positions to over 70 additional PhD candidates, whose research projects will be used for both scientific and educational purposes. In total, over 200 researchers, professors, doctoral candidates and students will be working in close collaboration. Their focus will lie on digital innovations for cost-effective patient-centric care solutions across the care continuum, and on lighting solutions that extend beyond basic illumination to connecting people, places and devices. Located at the heart of the Brainport region, both organizations are ideally situated to benefit from the strengths of the local ecosystem, which also enjoys excellent international connections. This partnership will help boost the development of expertise and the innovative power of the region, as well as further strengthening the position of TU/e and Philips in the digital innovation landscape. The collaboration fits within the top sector policy. The collaboration fits within the top sector policy. The top sector High Tech Systems and Materials (HTSM) supports this initiative and would support it financially through the TKI (Topconsortia for Knowledge and Innovation) scheme and the TKI HTSM. The TKI scheme is designed to encourage new public-private partnerships. This initiative is an excellent example.Philips and TU/e will also work closely together with other local partners in the ecosystem such as the Maxima Medical Center, Kempenhaege (center for epileptology and sleep medicine), and the Catharina Hospital. “The impact of digital technologies on healthcare and lighting will be huge, as all medical devices and lighting points will become part of the ‘internet of things’. We will need smart algorithms and advanced data analytics to make sense of the staggering amount of information in digital format that this will bring. The result will be valuable insights that can help improve people’s lives. By leveraging the deep competences of TU/e in computer science and electrical engineering and Philips’ application domain expertise and its ability to turn technology options into meaningful innovations, we will be able to accelerate the development of data-rich connected solutions for smart healthcare delivery and continuous personal health, as well as for smart cities, buildings, and homes,” says Henk van Houten, General Manager of Philips Research. “This initiative is the latest in a long tradition of partnerships in this region. It is the task of the TU/e to provide scientific training, to develop new knowledge and to educate the engineers of the future,” explains Jan Mengelers, chairman of the TU/e’s Executive Board. “We draw on our internationally recognized core areas of expertise in our search for societal solutions, in close collaboration with the business community. Philips’ presence in the United States, Asia and South America will ensure that our joint efforts make a global impact”.
