I'll only give him credit for saying those things if he believes them sincerely, because to think otherwise would surely indicate he doesn't have his heart and soul in it, and that would be cause for concern.
Managers, CEO's CFO's MUST believe in the product, and the strategy otherwise it's time to jettison them, and swiftly because they become less convincing and a liability as time passes (maybe go into politics it's less challenging). Better still if they feel they don't have the energy to continue they must voluntarily depart before they are pushed out the door.
