Thanks, Mooseadventures,
An interesting interview. Yes, in dealing with a pandemic, first you need to be able to determine whether or not someone is infected, so you can isolate and treat an infected person, and as importantly, release those clear of infection to go about their activities (eg work, school, travel, golf, deep sea diving etc etc). Testing for antigens tells you this - not testing for antibodies. The presence of antibodies tells you whether someone has been infected - also useful information.
From what I have learned so far, I understand that there are many such antibody tests for Covid-19, and that antigen tests for infection presence are not very sensitive. One Aussie poster living in the US at present, wrote on HC the other day of a test he had been given which had only a 75% accuracy on negative readings.
Hopefully with the poster's acquiescence, here is the post (Warn82 is the nic, post # 45934149):
"For perspective. I’m an Aussie living in USA, and hold ADO for years, almost forgot about them.
I got CV-19 4 weeks ago. Went for testing and was a 2 day wait. Took the 15min one and the 2 day one. Was told rapid 15min one is only 75% accurate hence taking 2 day one as well (225USD later). But i was positive on rapid test and apparently there aren’t any false positives, only false negatives. $75 was the cost of the rapid test test.
Today for comparison with 1000 new per day cases testing is 1 week or longer wait now and rapid testing supplies are in short supply (pointless).
So if they have the goods and it’s more accurate than 75%, giddy up. If they can supply the demand that exists today another tick. FDA has relaxed the certification for testing, so my test certificate stated “Not FDA certified under some relaxed law”. So an opportunity exists if they can get into the USA quickly with a partner under relaxed laws.
Not an academic assessment but real world experience with the 15min rapid test system in USA. Need more for sure. Especially to get schools opened, every school needs access to one. And looks like reinfection is a thing."
So for the rapid test that Warn82 undertook, 25% false negatives can slip through. A lot of Covid fish could swim through that net!
Pending what we learn about resilience from further infection, determining that an antibody reaction has occurred is also useful information. But in my unlettered view, perhaps it is less urgent, and certainly has not as high a priority as a highly sensitive antigen test. This is one of the significant points implied by Zabros earlier.
A highly sensitive 15 minute rpid test is what Anteo has. And has it now as a proven concept. it is a real test.
