Good summary @CaptainSmitty
For those who haven’t had the chance to listen to the presentations from ECCMID, below some additional key notes:
Hilmar Wisplinghoff (Labor Dr Wisplinghoff, Germany)
- With MRSA and VRE using chromogenic media, can bring down the time to result tremendously because what we’ve seen so far, the photographic / technical eye is able to detect colour change earlier than the human. For positives time to result can be decreased tremendously if move to AI based reading of plates
- Read at same quality (as humans), better traceability, documented results, pictures which itself is a great add on for validation, same consistent quality 24/7
Casey Moore (SA Pathology, Adelaide)
- Finings we’re that APAS had sensitivity of 100% whilst BD Kiestra 96.4%
- Specificity APAS 94.81%, plate in hand 93.47%, BD Kiestra 93%
- APAS showed consistent sensitivity to the gold standard and improved performance compared to digital reads using the BD Kiestra system
- APAS showed greater reliability, it was easy to use, minimal training required, well received within lab, minimal maintenance and performed very well
A Williams and A Spratt (Health Services Laboratory, UK) (ePoster)
- 100% sensitivity
- A reduction of scientist time of >80% for MRSA screening can be achieved using this platform in a low MRSA prevalence setting
- *poster insight coming soon (additional performance insight)
M Morales (LBT)
- Algorithms detected VRE after 13 hours and earlier than a microbiologist
This most recent data, presented from a number of labs, has shown APAS deliver 100% sensitivity, better performance than BD Kiestra, and reduced read time (for MRSA and VRE). This is in addition to the recent webinar held by Chris Ramsey (June 2021) in which he stated he was most excited about the AST capability of APAS (through the AMR module) which has shown to recognise and read 6 hour cultures - that data will eventually be released.
Perhaps Thermo Fisher or Becton Dickinson for the US Distribution Agreement
