I disagree. They do have quality network effect. The concept of crowd sourcing has been around for a while with the start of Amazon Mechanical Turk. But Amazon MT was only popular in Academia and never really took off massively because the workers got paid peanuts. Amazon sort of rebranded Mechanical Turk to Amazon Ground Truth these days (with additional functionality like Figure 8 for automated labelling), but everyone is afraid of Amazon stealing their IP. I don't know how far Appen will go, but I think they have major competitive advantages compared to others.
