News Corp veteran Richard Freudenstein joins the board as chair-elect, replacing co-founder and current chairman Chris Vonwiller who will retire on 28 October 2021.

Former chief executive and ex-rugby supremo Bill Pulver, will also retire from the board.

“Richard is an experienced director and Chairman of large public companies and brings extensive governance expertise to the Board,” says Vonwiller.

“His experience as a CEO and COO in the fast-evolving media industry also mean he is ideally placed to provide leadership for the next phase of Appen’s development.”

Freudenstein is also a director of Coles Group, News Corp’s REA Group and Cricket Australia.

He is currently Deputy Chancellor of The University of Sydney and is a member of the Advisory Board of Afiniti, a US-based data and software company that develops artificial intelligence for use in enterprise contact centres.

The latter might be handy as Appen battles downgrades and perceptions that it is too dependent on five tech customers, including Microsoft and Amazon, for 80 per cent of its business.
