I am just pointing out that with ChatGPT, businesses can annotate text better than what MTurk (potentially Appen). So significant chunk of Appen revenue is at risk if they aren't smart about what they offer. I didn't say that OpenAI not using a lot of data, yes they have a lot of data and yes they could have partnered with Appen. But I don't even know Appen is capable of fulfil OpenAI requirement. In order to generate & train dataset for GPT 3 & 4, OpenAI used technique call Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback, you can understand it as a interactive session between GPT models & human. They probably built the platform in house and hire a bunch of cheap labour (i believe from some African Countries).

The competition is quite tough, i hope this partnership bring new source of revenue and pivot the business to Marketplace, Platform as a Service direction. I really hope Appen to come back because i have a significant chunk invested in them (i should learn about diversification better).We use LabelBox in my company. Maybe i should try to convince them to use Appen .
