AFRMaking hydrogen from fossil fuels requires construction of infrastructure at scale, which is why Dr Finkel reckons it is more suited to export markets.
''It is quite likely in my opinion that [hydrogen from fossil fuels] would be associated with a long-term international supply contract," he said.
''I don't think it is a winner-takes-all competition, it is quite possible that two or three [methods] might have long-term potential''.
The 'blockchain' of energy
Just as "blockchain" was the word on the lips of every financial institution a few years ago, hydrogen has become the buzzword in the mining and energy sector.
Companies like Woodside and Fortescue Metals Group are talking up their desire to become hydrogen players.
