When converting no CGT is payable.. however the CGT clock is reset as the shares are a NEWLY owned asset.
So you need to own for another 12 month period after converting for the 50% discount to apply.
If you have held the options for 12 months and don't feel the share is going upwards for the next 12 month period you could sell the options directly to market if there are still buyers... but in the end it comes down to the spread of the options to the shares at the time of conversion as to which is more beneficial.
