It’s been a pain in my backside for a while. Being Kiwi and living in Aus I thought it might prevent my partner and I from leaving Aus for a few years to travel and work abroad (by forcing us to pay CGT on shares we weren’t selling). Turns out that as long as you always intend on returning to Aus and don’t reside in one country too long (ie change residence) + plus a couple of other tests, then you won’t get slugged with the tax. But at the heart of your question I believe you were thinking “screw the ATO, I did all the work, how can I avoid the CGT!” - like so many of us have thought.....The answer is: The ATO will smite you!
