For those unaware of the various roles in HC:
In common parlance, a devil'z advocate is someone who, given a certain argument, takes a position he or she does not necessarily agree with, for the sake of argument. In taking such position, the individual taking on the devil's advocate role seeks to engage others in an argumentative discussion process.
Of course a contrary opinion is another thing altogether. The devil'z advocate is not interested in putting up opinions for others to consider, or refute, or absorb as part of taking a group towards an optimum, or total agreement, but is combative and designed to be antagonistic, such as legal proceedings.
There is no room for acceptance of error, nor acceptance of losing any facet of an argument, or conceding a point. The role of devil'z advocate was established by the church in the canonisation of saints and was designed solely to refute all claims.
