Nothing is safe. Even if you stash your cash under the mattress it will just be inflated away. Even worse as the Indians found out a couple of years back; with a stroke of a pen and practically overnight, the cash you stashed is no longer legal tender.

Keep enough cash for day to day needs and enough for opportunities in the stock market. Any surplus above that and you are better off exchanging the cash into intrinsic assets (physical gold, silver, shares, land, property etc..) Anything that holds value long term and outside counterparty reach...
