In general it will be by the amount plus franking if any, "in general", though I have seen stocks close down marginally or even gain on the ex-dividend date, but that is rare, and usually stocks with low yields.
Today is a great day for GNC not to have gone down a lot more, although there still is 4 hours to trade, however on the flip side, the days it was meant to strengthen a bit or consolidate, it got sold down.
At 7.60 I'm in!!
